Rocky Fork

Lake – Rocky Fork

Tournament – Columbus Bassmasters

Launch time and spot – North Shore Ramp 7am

Air temperature – 70’s

Water temperature (and note any changes in these temps during the day) 65-68

Wind direction and speed (include changes and times) North/North East 11mph

Who you fished with – B. Stowe was my co-angler during tourney

Weight of fish caught Day 1 practice boated two keepers and raised two. (12 inch fish) – Tourney had two bites both on green pumpkin Senko shallow in grass. (12 inch fish) 2.37 total.

Where each fish was caught (depth, structure, cover, etc) – shallow grass 2 to 4 feet

What you caught them on – Senko Wacky

How deep the fish were – shallow

What color they were biting – green pumpkin

Details on rigs such as sinker weight, hook size, leader length, etc – weightless senko

Details about structure and cover – were the rocks round or jagged? Grass emergent or submerged? – Grass & Wood

What didn’t work – The lake was pressured with another 96 boat tourney taking place. Plus day before it was raining, windy with high of 55. Tourney was warm in low 70’s with high blue skies.. Everywhere you went was boats after boat..

Tourney was won with 3 fish weighing 6 pounds. We finished in 3rd place.

Mosquito Lake

Who you fished with – Was co-angler

Weight of fish caught (estimate) 2 pounds day 1, 1 pound day 2 – Boater 1.4 pounds day 1 – 8 pounds day 2

Where each fish was caught (depth, structure, cover, etc) – shallow grass 2 to 4 feet

What you caught them on – Senko Wacky, Buzz Bait

How deep the fish were – shallow

What color they were biting – Green/chart tail, green pumpkin

Details on rigs such as sinker weight, hook size, leader length, etc – weightless senko

Going Fishing Today – Portage Lakes

Portage Lakes

Made my first voyage to Portage Lakes on May 16th to fish Ohio Bass Nation tournament. Long drive from Columbus but just under 2 hours. I was hoping to get up there to pre-fish but it wasn’t in the cards that week.

I was hoping to draw a co-angler who maybe familiar with the lake as well but that wasn’t in the cards as well. I had spoke to a few people one person with the local club that wasn’t fishing told me to just drop trolling motor when I get there and begin fishing. The second person I met via Bass Boat Central offered me a map of lake with some spots to hit.

Partly cloudy day to begin with and water temp around 70 degrees. We decided to drop trolling motor from the start and begin hitting the banks. I was throwing a 1/8 oz buzz bait and partner was through a Pop R. I quickly had two keepers on a black buzz bait fishing the outside of the grass. In the mean time my partner began throwing a Senko Black with Blue flecks and boated two keepers and lost one. So when your in Rome you do what the Romans do, I changed up to same Senko and caught two keepers and a couple short fish. All shallow but within the grass.

About two hours before tournament ended we made our way out to the main lake where you go from the idle zone to ski zone. There I seen several bass boats lined up fishing away from the bank and seen a nice channel there where you could position your boat in 9 to 10 feet of water and cast up to 2 to 4 feet. I decided to test our the Ned Rig for the first time. Within two hours I managed to catch my 5th fish and cull three more. There was one that took line and I never did see what it was but it was big. My guess a catfish since I caught another one in the 6 pound range. I was impressed with the Ned Rig, if you haven’t tried it pick a bag up and test it out on your home lake.

I also gave a Ned Rig to my co-angler and he completed his limit of 3 fish he was allowed using the rig. He also got a check for 3rd place as a co-angler.

My results against the boaters was a 9th place finish weighing 7.96 pounds. All in all first time on the lake I will pleased to have a limit of bass.

Alum Creek Bass Fishing

I decided to heard out to Alum Creek for some fun fishing on May 3rd. I launched the boat around 7 am and headed to a couple of spots where I normally can catch a fish our two. Water temps were 58 degrees with high blue skies, outside temp around mid-70’s. This was my first trip to Alum this year. Around 9:30 I decided to hit some pockets on the upper pool and I picked up a soft plastic and began flipping cover. Didn’t take long to boat my first fish.

I then moved up to second pool and continued to flip cover and boated two more fish and lost two fish doing same.

Over all good day and pulled the boat out at noon.

Clear Fork Lake October 19th

Clear Fork Lake

Last tournament of the year, weather only to be in low to mid 50’s with sunshine and brisk wind. Water temp was around 55 degrees. My coangler managed to pick up 2 keepers early before we got fully bright skys and wind picked up.

I didn’t pick up any keepers until late in the day around 1pm fishing a stump field with Carolina rig.

Finished 4th for the day, only 11 fish weighed in. Tough day.

Clearfork Reservoir

I got to head up to Clearfork on Sunday October 12th to prefish for the last tournament of the year which is just a week away. Beautiful morning, outside temp kept dropping as I made my way to the lake showing 31 degrees by the time I arrived.

Great fall colors around the lake this time of year. I don’t expect them to last much longer.

Got the boat in the water around 7:30 am, water temp was showing around 53 degrees or so. Sunshine but very windy out on the lake. Lake has plenty of grass but much of it is looking on the brown side. I fished from one end to the other including some humps I have never fished before up near the dam area. Finally around noon I caught my first bass in back of a little creek in very shallow water throwing a white spinnerbait around clumps of grass.

Fish measured around 15 inches and he ate the spinner bait. I thought I may be onto something where I was at since a couple throws later I hooked up again but this time it was a very large musky. I was lucky he came off at the side of the boat. I seen 4 large musky while I was in the area and hooked into another one but he came off as well. This one was on a Z-man Chatter bait. As I moved out of the back of the creek I backed off the bank ways and caught my last bass for the day on the Chatterbait.

Very nice fish almost 18 inches long. Didn’t hit all that hard, I thought I may had been coming through some grass at the time.

Only fished until 1:30 since my trolling motor battery’s for some reason were way down. Not sure I have much of a pattern but at least covered some water and have a starting point.
